11 to 13 September – Tadurem-Nengone (Maré)

September is the month when the Loyalty Islands’ grand agricultural and handicraft fair happens. It is a get-together that should not be missed, where the Loyalty Islands’ finest local produce will be on display. An exhibition of the islands’ food production capabilities, which gets better and better every year!

The beginnings

It all started back in 1990, when some Nengone farmers came up with the idea of getting together to showcase the island’s agricultural wealth. Starting out on a modest scale, the event quickly took off and in subsequent years other islands joined in, with the common goal of promoting production in all the sectors related to food and activities with real potential for stimulating economic growth in the Loyalty Islands Province: agriculture, horticulture, fishing, traditional handicrafts, etc.

30 years on

As luck would have it, the 2020 edition of this fair -the 30th anniversary- will be held in the very same place where it all began: Tadurem-Maré (Nengone). Over the years, it has turned into a gathering that brings together Maré, Lifou, Ouvéa and Tiga, to show off the locals’ know-how, the products of their lands, their regional specialties, their processed products and their cultural heritage. It is an anniversary that promises to turn into a grand gala!

The products

Each island has its own character and the Loyalty islands Fair is always an opportunity to appreciate this, through the products displayed here. Maré exhibits its different varieties of yams, its seafood, its fine jams and sandalwood perfume. Lifou offers its products with « organic » labels: for example, vanilla, honey, seasonable fruit and vegetables. Ouvéa and its Walei Country bring green vegetables, handicrafts and clothes, but, above all, its riches from the sea, including delicious smoked fish and the seafood skewers loved by everyone.

The atmosphere

The meeting place is on the Tadurem site. The Tuo tribe hosts visitors passing through. Numerous stands exhibit their products amidst a whirl of activities: tasting traditional dishes, cooking competitions, weaving, coconut grating, demonstrations related to copra, wildlife exhibitions, games which involve guessing the size of a yam or the weight of some other product, a pig chase for children, information from agricultural technicians, a farmers´parade, concerts, singing and dancing, and the not-to-be-missed election of the Loyalty Islands Fair Queen. Those are all activities to give you an insight into the country and its marvelous places. This is a gathering of our islands’ people, in a festive ambiance that hints of meeting, sharing, visiting and appreciating the finer things in life.
