1 to 3 May – Nece Tribe-NENGONE (Maré)
Held annually in the Nengone Country of New Caledonia, the Avocado Festival is an event not to be missed, well-known and well attended by the locals. The festival has been running for more than a quarter of a century now, popular for the great variety of Nengone products it displays and the many local dishes on offer to visitors during the course of the weekend.
It all began back in the 1990’s, when the Nengone farmers came up with the idea to organize a festival featuring the avocado, with the aim of promoting the different varieties grown here. In response to the interest and enthusiasm aroused by the farmers, Guahma’s high chief Nidoïsh Naisseline came up with the idea of setting up a package tour, enabling tourists to attend the festival and enjoy the Nengone country at the same time.
Nowadays, the Pahnameneng (tribal) committee brings Nece producers and tribal members together, along with the Tuo, Mebuet and Padawa tribes, to prepare and carry out this grand gala.
During these three days, you will have the chance to get to know the Maré people, famous for their generosity, hospitality, and welcoming smiles, and who will receive you as guests of honour. Much more than a mere local party, the Avocado Festival is a unique opportunity to live with a tribe and experience the daily life of the Si Nengone.
Apart from the Avocado Festival itself, you can take advantage of the opportunity to venture forth and discover the island and its fascinating culture. Set out on a boat excursion, in the company of the sea clan fishermen, going hiking to sites open especially for the occasion, make a tour of the island and have a go at fishing for the coconut crab. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy during this weekend!
Just let your curiosity be your guide!
The special offer includes return boat tickets in NGV Betico, accommodation with the local tribe, breakfast, return transfers, as well as a team on site to welcome you and accompany you throughout the weekend!
