From 28 to 30 June 2019 – Hnyimëhë Tribe – IAAI (Ouvéa)
Over the course of a weekend, Ouvéa invites you to plunge into the depths of the most beautiful lagoon in the world. One of our most emblematic events, bringing together all the vital energy of the ocean in this 12th annual session.
This year, the Lagoon Festival will take place on IAAI, the local name of the island Ouvéa, « the island closest to paradise ». Keep in mind that Ouvéa is part of the six UNESCO World Heritage Sites in New Caledonia. The grand communal event is, above all, an opportunity for its numerous participants, associations, fishermen and all those who love the sea to share their expertise and know-how with the general public.
The recently formed IAAI Festival Committee brings together the island’s youth under its roof, organizes and federates the professionals involved with the Lagoon Festival, seeking to make the best of the territory’s cultural and touristic assets, its handicrafts, its history and its maritime realm.
The three-day festival features numerous stands, including products from the ocean, as well as a local food market where you can have something to eat. For gourmets and seafood fans, the Lagoon Festival represents an opportunity to sample various renowned island species « sans gratte » (certified to be free of « gratte », a parasitic illness that is sometimes present in ocean fish), for example the « maleuleu » (pronounced « maléouléou »), also known as bec-de-cane (« duck’s beak »), which is appreciated for its tender flesh, along with other tasty and healthy delicacies.
An information booth operated by the Tourist Office IAAI will welcome you and suggest numerous activities, as well as various places you can visit during the weekend. There are boat trips to the islets, fishing competitions, environmental awareness programmes with a chance to get to know Ouvéa’s maritime and land wildlife, as well as an introduction to local watersports or hikes to the Lekine Cliffs and the Anubet Cave.
During these three days you can experience tribal life, and go home with memories to last a lifetime, whether you come alone, with family or with friends. Keep in mind that your holidays here will also contribute to the well-being of your local hosts.
